Designed as a private residence for a two-person household, this family house is situated on a plot along the banks of the Warwick River in Newport News, Virginia. The unique position of the site offers unobstructed views toward the river, which became a key driver of the architectural concept. The main living spaces, living room and dining area are oriented toward the backyard, allowing daily life to unfold in constant visual connection with the water.
The design explores a contemporary architectural expression while subtly referencing local building traditions. This balance is achieved through a careful selection of locally sourced materials and a functional organization that reflects familiar residential typologies of the area, reinterpreted in a modern way.
Interior spaces are organized to support both shared and private moments, with an open and fluid layout in the common areas and clearly defined private zones. Large openings frame views of the river and ensure generous daylight, reinforcing the relationship between the interior and the surrounding landscape. The result is a modern yet context-sensitive home that respects its environment while offering a calm and comfortable living experience.
